EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
