Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Group

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a colorful mix of characters, and a thrilling plot including divine entities, fiends, and sinister influences expanding in strength within the urban setting.

Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season are included.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

Episode 3 ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the initial group of heroes who will separate from the main group to undertake their own adventure, apart from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table consists of Teor Pridesire (played by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

The Reason for Division

With 13 cast members, it was obvious from the beginning that having everyone at a single group would be impossible.

Hence, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Prelude, connecting the characters’ stories before dividing into three distinct groups: Fighters, Strategists, and Seekers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

Per the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for players who prefer a typically action-packed battle-oriented narrative style where non-violent answers are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander might seem out of place, but the actions of the third episode demonstrate why these particular heroes are best suited for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the party knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal initial meeting with the enemy group.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose death started the campaign’s events—exploited the foes for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and taking all the magical artifacts to auction.

The traitor then cleared his liabilities and fled to a secure base in the northern region, north of the city, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each character has a specific drive to depart the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, wants retribution.
  • Kattigan has experience in the region and cautions that it is a dangerous location.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to eliminate the fighter and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • However, their position as key figures in the powerful family could enable the team reach places they usually can’t.
  • Additionally, Teor vowed a unbreakable promise to The savior for his rescue and will now accompany him anywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the powers that govern Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The healer defied the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • Teor is marked for death by the family.

This leaves them few options but to travel to the northern region in pursuit of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

From the recent installment’s Cooldown, we find out that the combat party will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the rest of the players to round up the Explorers and Schemers groups.

Fans can expect discovering which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on October 24.
